AFR-IX Telecom Deploys Routed Optical Networking (RON) Proof of Concept in Barcelona
At AFR-IX Telecom, we continue to push the boundaries of innovation to provide the most advanced connectivity solutions across our infrastructure. We are proud to announce the successful deployment of a Proof of Concept (PoC) using Cisco’s Routed Optical Networking (RON) technology between two of our strategic sites in Barcelona.
This deployment, carried out with the support of Cisco and our trusted partner SATEC, is a major step forward in enhancing the scalability and efficiency of our backbone network.
What We Deployed
The PoC leveraged the Cisco 8000 Series routing platform, equipped with:
- Cisco ONS-QDD-OLS (Optical Line System)
- 400G ZR+ QSFP-DD Coherent Transceivers
- A single pair of optical fiber
This powerful combination enabled us to achieve an 8x400G capacity over a single fiber pair — a remarkable upgrade that significantly boosts bandwidth while streamlining our infrastructure.
Why Routed Optical Networking?
Routed Optical Networking (RON) is emerging as a game-changing architecture for modern ISPs. By converging IP and optical layers into a single, unified network, RON simplifies operations and reduces the total cost of ownership (TCO). The key benefits of this model include:
- Simplified network architecture
- Improved scalability and flexibility
- Lower latency and reduced equipment footprint
- Optimized power consumption and space usage
- Lower operational and capital expenditures
Ready for Tomorrow’s Network Demands
This deployment is part of our ongoing strategy to adopt next-generation networking technologies that align with the evolution of cloud services, enterprise demands, and high-bandwidth applications. Routed Optical Networking positions AFR-IX Telecom to meet future traffic needs with agility, resilience, and cost-efficiency.
We extend our thanks to the teams at Cisco and SATEC for their close collaboration and technical excellence in making this PoC a success.
