Regional Internet and Data Services in Africa
The Global System for Mobile Communications Association estimated in 2019 that there were at least 456 million mobile subscribers in sub-Saharan Africa. These statistics indicate that the region is seeing the fastest global growth of 4.6% year-on-year, with more than 50% of mobile subscribers being regular mobile internet users. Africa has been described as the next frontier for the internet, as the continent presents development and innovation opportunities to close the digital divide. Despite the presence of the digital gap, the continent is, however, showing creative emerging technologies and countries are making progress in improving data penetration. AFR-IX Telecom has recently opened new regional offices in Mali, Niger, Cameroun, and South Africa, and we are excited to offer our services to support growth plans for these countries.
Internet and data services in Mali
The country has a challenging topography for telecom infrastructure development, making it quite difficult to reach remote settlements and service them with fixed or mobile networks. Despite these challenges, the latest statistics suggest that 59.8% of the country’s population are internet users. AFR-IX telecom Mali has identified an opportunity to provide internet and data services to corporates and telecommunication operators in Mali. We pride ourselves on having the most reliable Metro Ethernet Pan African Network, which enables us to cover the entire African continent.
AFR-IX telecom believes in Mali and thus, it has invested the following resources to be the most reliable network in Mali:
- Fiber network roll-out in main cities
- POPs in Gao and Bamako, and more to come in the near future
- International trunks connected to the main points
- License Operator
Internet service provider in Niger
Although Niger is one of the largest West African countries, it is considered one of the most poverty-stricken countries in the world. Statistics indicate that a mere 13.4% of the population are internet users, despite international investment. However, recent acquisitions to the Trans-Saharan Dorsal optical fiber (SDR) network have extended the fiber optic infrastructure reach while increasing global capacity.
AFR-IX Telecom Niger offers the following communications services to suit customized requirements:
- Addressing to the corporate market
- Service ability of 99.5%
- Presence in all of Niger

Improvements in submarine and terrestrial cable connectivity have heralded an increase in international bandwidth, contributing to lower consumer access prices. The country has definitely embraced fintech, as money services carry approximately 95% of all electronic transactions. Internet penetration figures suggest that 28.9% of the population uses the internet. Work has recently started on a new 347km fiber link to Congo, and new funding has been received to continue national fiber roll-out. AFR-IX covers the entire African continent with more than 50 POPs, and we have partnered with more than 20 Africa-based operators.
