Barcelona, 2 March 2022: Telecom Egypt, Egypt’s first integrated telecom operator and one of the largest subsea cables operators in the region, and AFR-IX Telecom, a Barcelona-based infrastructure and telecom operator, signed a landing party agreement for the landing of the largest Mediterranean submarine cable system, Medusa, in Egypt. The cable will connect the northern and southern shores of the Mediterranean Sea. It will feature 16 landing points in Mediterranean countries, including Portugal and Morocco. Spain and Algeria are also among the landing points. Additionally, it will land in France, Tunisia, Italy, Greece, and Egypt.
Telecom Egypt partners with global submarine cable owners, providing infrastructure to 140 landing points in 60+ countries. The company invested in submarine cables for the shortest, most reliable path between Africa, Asia, and Europe. Moreover, Telecom Egypt diversifies its infrastructure by building new landing stations and crossing routes. They also invest in new systems to meet rising global bandwidth demand.
Medusa, a new-generation submarine cable, follows the open cable standard. It tackles challenges by diversifying and decongesting data routes. The project increases capacity with more fibers per cable. Additionally, it promotes open access to all European landing stations.
