AFR-IX has launched its DDoS scrubbing platform across Africa, marking the company’s expansion into managed cybersecurity services alongside its existing connectivity and IP transit portfolio. The deployment represents a significant milestone in AFR-IX’s evolution from a connectivity provider to a comprehensive digital infrastructure and cybersecurity partner for the continent.
The platform is designed to detect, mitigate and filter malicious traffic in real time, diverting attack traffic while allowing legitimate traffic to reach customer infrastructure, including websites, DNS services and IP backbones. Customers are provided with visibility of attack activity through a dedicated portal, enabling real-time monitoring and reporting of mitigation events.
Phase 1 — Live in Johannesburg
The first phase of the deployment is already operational in Johannesburg, South Africa, with all technical equipment and infrastructure fully integrated into AFR-IX’s network environment and running.
The platform is already serving initial customers, with more than 15 contracts signed and in onboarding or activation phases. The platform serves operators, enterprises, financial services, public sector organisations, and governments across Southern and East Africa, protecting them against high-risk and sophisticated cyber threats.
AFR-IX’s DDoS protection is further reinforced through its Black Hole service, which allows for the automatic discarding of malicious packets directed at any IP address within a customer’s network, effectively minimising the impact of an attack and safeguarding the availability and performance of IP Transit services.
“This project represents a major milestone in AFR-IX’s evolution from a connectivity provider to a comprehensive digital infrastructure and cybersecurity partner for Africa. Over the past months, we have successfully consolidated the internal integration of the platform across our systems, operational processes, and service delivery framework. Our analysis demonstrates a strong return on investment while creating significant value for customers through improved network resilience, reduced downtime, and enhanced service protection.” — Christian Fadin, Program Manager, AFR-IX
Phase 2 — Expansion to Barcelona and Lagos
Following the Johannesburg deployment, AFR-IX plans to extend its scrubbing infrastructure to Barcelona and Lagos as part of a phased rollout strategy.
The additional locations are intended to extend mitigation coverage across Western, Northern and Southern Africa, while also integrating European infrastructure points to support cross-continental traffic flows and upstream protection capacity.
The company said the expanded footprint will allow DDoS traffic to be absorbed closer to attack sources and routed through distributed scrubbing points across its network ecosystem.
“DDoS attacks continue to increase in frequency and sophistication across global networks. By leveraging AFR-IX’s growing peering ecosystem and upstream network expansion, we have established a scalable commercial and technical framework that enables rapid market adoption. Through strategic partnerships, customer engagement, and regional expansion initiatives, we are positioning AFR-IX as a leading provider of managed DDoS protection services across Africa.” — Dylan Carver, Sales Strategy and Execution Lead, AFR-IX
This deployment reinforces AFR-IX’s commitment to improving the security, stability, and performance of the African Internet ecosystem. By bringing carrier-grade DDoS protection closer to African networks from Johannesburg to Barcelona and Lagos AFR-IX is ensuring that operators, enterprises, and critical infrastructure organisations across the continent can operate with confidence in an increasingly complex threat landscape. This is not just a product launch. It is a statement of intent: a more secure, resilient, and interconnected Africa starts with the right infrastructure in the right places.
